A series of storms have greeted the new year at Newhaven, causing an explosion of new life and filling desert lakes and swamps. In three days, parts of the sanctuary received well over 200mm of rain, more than the entire rainfall for 2009!

On Friday 18 December, we lost two members of the AWC family – Stan and Mary Ennor – in a tragic road accident on Mt Gibson Wildlife Sanctuary.

Welcome to our Summer 2009/10 edition of Wildlife Matters. 2009 has been an immensely challenging year for most organisations. One measure of the nation's wealth - our sharemarket - started the year in steep decline before turning a corner in March. The relatively rapid turnaround in this financial indicator stands in stark contrast to the relentless decline in the indicators of Australia's natural capital. Our indicators for threatened species, landscape health and matters such as water quality continue to deteriorate.

for the endangered Woylie (or Brush-tailed Bettong) at Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary.

Welcome to the Spring 2009 edition of Wildlife Matters. As this edition goes to print, we are in the process of finalising the acquisition of Bowra (see pages 4-5), a 14,000 hectare property located in the heart of the Mulga Lands in Queensland. Bowra will be our 21st sanctuary, bringing the AWC network to more than 2.56 million hectares
(6.3 million acres.
